Context:
A cultural landscape can be understood as a spatial fabric spread over a geographic region, reflecting human adaption and use of natural resources. It is often expressed in the way land is organised and used, settlement patterns, movement systems, and the types of structures that are built.

The most widely referred definition of a cultural landscape is provided by the UNESCO World Heritage system:

“Cultural landscapes are cultural properties and represent the combined works of nature and of man. They are illustrative of the evolution of human society and settlement over time, under the influence of the physical constraints and/or opportunities presented by their natural environment and of successive social, economic and cultural forces, both external and internal.”

Symposium focus:
The scientific symposium will delve into the idea of ‘cultural landscapes’ – their historical evolution and contemporary manifestations, reinforcing the idea of dynamism of a cultural landscape and its future pathway. A special focus will be on the exploration of this theme in the Indian context, highlighting the archaeological, anthropological, ecological, spiritual, mythological and cultural dimensions.

In terms of contemporary relevance, the philosophy, practice and management of cultural landscapes will be assessed in relation to the impact of climate change, sustainability and development.
