Cultural Heritage of Place: Why it matters in the outcomes of migration and displacement
Joint meeting of the IPCC, UNESCO and ICOMOS (2021)
  • Elizabeth Brabec
Abstract
A multidisciplinary body of research has developed around the trauma of displacement, focusing on the resulting short and long term psychological and health impacts.  However, little research has explored the role of cultural heritage in the mitigation of trauma, and the role which the heritage aspects of place attachment have in the management of relocation trauma.  Adjusting to new social environments, different physical ordering of space, and unfamiliar ecosystems are among the challenges facing those who are dislocated as they pass into temporary camps and reach a resettlement location. Most of the literature and its theoretical models indicate an end point at the point of resettlement, ignoring the long-term struggles that revolve around issues of heritage and ontological security.  This poster develops the theoretical understanding of the role of natural and cultural heritage in creating place and proposes a new model of the complex inter-relationships between heritage and place.
