Tack Lecture at William & Mary (2018)

Presentation
Abstract
The term “fake news” dates back to the 1940's, when post-war commentators expressed concerns about doctored images and government propaganda.  In recent years fake news has deployed new digital technologies that use photorealistic 3-D simulation, machine learning, and predictive algorithms that undermine basic truth claims.  This lecture will discuss ways to get beyond contemporary moral panics to understand how fake news has become part of the rhythms of everyday life.
