About Elizabeth Eckelkamp

Elizabeth B. Eckelkamp spent her formative years in Sapporo, Japan, received her BA from Webster University (1985) and her MA in Asian Studies from Washington University (1991). She taught Japanese at UMSL as an adjunct from Washington University for 8 years and has been a full time faculty member in the UMSL of Foreign Languages and Literatures for 5 years.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to make non-western literature studies available to students on our campus through the Honors College. Students cannot truly appreciate world culture through literature if their study is limited to Western works. Adding course offerings in The Tale of Genji and other significant Japanese literary works in translation is a benefit to our students and a positive reflection on the Honors College. These courses also give the many students on our campus with interests in Japanese pop culture an opportunity to study the origins of that culture through classical literature."
