Research and Interests:
Dr. Elisabeth Frieda M. Schlegel is Associate Professor, Faculty Development and Medical Education Research, in the Department of Science Education at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. She develops and executes programs to facilitate faculty in delivering basic science and clinical content across the continuum of undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. She also serves as a facilitator for PEARLS (Patient-Centered Explorations in Active Reasoning, Learning and Synthesis) as well as in microbiology education for first-and second-year medical students.

Dr. Schlegel joined Hofstra Northwell after serving as Lecturer on Medicine for Harvard Medical School, and as Global Health Medical Education Specialist for The Health Advancement in Vietnam HAIVN, a partnership between Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s. Having experienced the need of integrated medical education to alleviate healthcare disparity in the context of a rapidly evolving economy, she specializes in educational program management in corporate and academic settings, curriculum development, medical education, and global healthcare leadership. As a microbiologist by training, Dr. Schlegel taught microbiology and virology at the medical school level, and enjoys supporting students to become effective, successful physicians. Dr. Schlegel received both, a MSc. in Genetics and a Ph.D. in Genetics and Microbiology from the University of Salzburg, Austria, and conducted postdoctoral studies in the Herpesvirology laboratory of Dr. John A. Blaho at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Specializing in non-profit medical school models promoting accountability and global healthcare leadership, she received an M.B.A. from The Malcolm Baldrige School of Business at Post University in 2012.
