This article analyzes the literary treatment of Mexican mestizo space in two stories of El llano en llamas (1953): “Nos han dado la tierra” and “El día del derrumbe.” The analysis collates texts written by Rulfo in the last years of his life: “México y los mexicanos” (1986) and “Notas sobre la literatura indígena en México” (1981), along with some commentaries made in the presentations. Although an earlier production, his stories express similar

questions to those in the essays mentioned above since they allude symbolically to the cultural politics of official discourse in Mexico and the effects of these on the rural population of the first half of the 20th century.
