AbstractSetting the context for the emergence of the charitable work of St. Vincent de Paul (1580-1660) and St. Louise de Marillac (1591-1660) and the groups they founded, this article examines the urgent societal and religious challenges posed by a vast increase in poverty in France during the seventeenth century.
