The issue of the earth’s diminishing biodiversity was one of the main topics discussed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development or Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to June 14, 1992; and culminated in the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1993. The convention is thus the first global, comprehensive agreement to tackle the conservation of the variety of life on earth including species, genes and ecosystems.
