Associate Professor and Director of Instrumental Studies
Dr. Charles Dwayne Wilson has been the Director of Bands /Instrumental Studies and Associate Professor of Music at Campbell University for the last 20 years. At Campbell, Wilson teaches numerous music education courses and supervises the instrumental music education program. He is also the founder, artistic director and conductor of the Sandhills Wind Symphony. Dr. Wilson has served as Executive Director of the Suncoast School of Musical Arts and has held the position of Dean of the Suncoast School of Music at Trinity College of Florida. Wilson also served the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1995-1997 as a teaching assistant, guest lecturer, and guest conductor of the UNCG bands. He received his Doctoral degree in Music Education and Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Wilson’s doctoral focus at the University of North Carolina Greensboro included Music Education, Instrumental Conducting, Research in Music Education, and Administration and Leadership. Dr. Wilson’s research has focused on the administration of small college bands, mentoring music teachers, leadership. He holds workshops on Leadership Development for Arts Teachers and Students throughout the state. He is currently exploring the numerous music therapy applications of therapeutic hand drumming including protocols for stress reduction, resilience, and wellness for undergraduate students.
Dr. Wilson has studied conducting with many outstanding wind band conductors including Paula Crider and Jerry Junkin from the University of Texas, Larry Rachcliff from SMU, Alan McMurray from the University of Colorado, Mallory Thompson and John Paynter from Northwestern University, Frank Wickes from LSU, Anthony Melillo from George Mason University, Craig Kirkoff from The University of Minnesota, and John Locke from UNCG.
Dr. Wilson is an active member of NCMEA, NCBA, MENC, CBDNA, and ACSI and he serves as guest conductor/clinician, workshop/ seminar speaker, and instrumental adjudicator for the Public, Private, and Independent Schools in the state as well as throughout the southeast. He has served as conductor for the Triangle Wind Ensemble, guest conductor at the North Carolina Mozart Festival, and guest conductor of the North Carolina Pops Orchestra.
