Abstract
The chapter describes the places and spaces of solar power technologies, with an emphasis on crystalline silicon and thin-film photovoltaic modules. The chapter begins with a brief description of solar power technologies, the solar resource potential, geographies of production and installation and the general benefits of solar over alternative energy resources. The next section discusses the photovoltaic industry history and its global structure. The main body of the chapter explores energy transitions, with a focus on the social and environmental dimensions of solar power commodity chains; the spatial requirements and emerging landscape conflicts over siting solar electricity generating facilities; the integration of solar power into the built environment; key policy frameworks used to facilitate solar farm deployment; and opportunities to maximize the social and environmental benefits of solar transitions through worker health and safety programs, green chemistry, eco-design, extended producer responsibility and light on land practices.
