Abstract

There are many pressures that threaten the future of higher education as universities and colleges develop and find their place in this dynamic market. The potential benefits of sustainability planning and strategic actions that focus on economic, environmental, and social gains will help to ensure the future growth and health of higher education. There is also an increasing responsibility for organizations to help find solutions to the world's environmental and social problems (Sustainable Business Strategies, 2006). "The best organizations are trying to turn responsibility into opportunity" (Sustainable Business Strategies, 2006, pg. 1). This paper explores the importance of strategic planning and sustainability strategic planning at colleges and universities from a systems thinking perspective.
