Abstract
The practice of secular mindfulness has been implemented in many professional environments. Studies show mindfully engaged workers report more balance and wellbeing and are better equipped to deal with workplace conflict. Mindfulness has received only limited attention from PR practitioners, educators and scholars. This article, exploring mindful awareness through the lens of the Theory of Planned Behavior, offers results of a pilot study showing widespread clarity among PR professionals of mindfulness as a concept. Still, fewer than half of industry professionals reported a mindful workplace, and none reported a systematic effort to engage mindfully on the job. Seven best practices recommendations are offered, based on case studies from other fields and supported by suggestions for future scholarly inquiry. The article takes the position that mindful awareness warrants more attention as a public relations workplace concern, since PR is one of the most stressful and challenging occupations in the professional world.
