Abstract
An essay is presented which provides a history of the conflicting ideas governing management of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. The construction of the Grandfather Hotel in the 1880s, the notion that the mountain should remain pristine, and the development of the vacation town of Linwood, North Carolina are examined. The introduction of conservation activities and forest management as well as the transfer of the mountain to the state of North Carolina are also discussed.
