Abstract
Intersectionality is gaining popularity as a lens through which we can consider the experiences of marginalized populations. However, in regards to cultural research, how can we implement an intersectional sensibility to ensure we are capturing the complete picture of a given phenomenon? The purpose of this chapter is to understand how to engage intersectionality as a lens to conceptualize the cultural research process. We begin by examining how intersectionality can be framed as an analytic sensibility (Cho, Crenshaw, & McCall, 2013) in psychological research. We then highlight an ecological conceptualization of culture that incorporates tenets of intersectionality and explore how intersectionality disrupts dominant ideas within cultural research processes and methodologies. We conclude by detailing how quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research can reflect intersectionality as an analytic sensibility when aiming to conduct cultural research.
