This chapter is a reflection upon and development of the theoretical framework for the empirical study of terms for talk (and communicative action generally). That framework was published originally in 1989 with a literature developing since then in its use. This chapter utilizes that literature as resources for developing our thinking about this meta-communication practice, as a culturally situated one.
