Abstract

[Ru(4,4'-bis(4-(thiophen-2-yl)phenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)]Cl2 can be synthesized by the reaction of Ru(DMSO)4Cl2 with 4,4'-bis(4-(thiophen-2-yl)phenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, a 2,2-bipyridine adduct. 2-(4-bromophenyl)thiophene was synthesized and purified using sublimation and characterized by NMR, GCMS, and IR spectroscopy and used to form the 2,2-bipyridine adduct ligand. This Ru(II) complex can be used to improve the photosensitizing properties of ruthenium bipyridine complexes by adding auxiliary ligands to the bipyridine groups.
