Theories on why the current global nursing shortage is being felt more acutely than those in the past abound. Authors have argued that the shortage is both a supply and a demand problem or, conversely, that it is a systemic problem, not a supply problem. The graying of both the US population and the nursing work force has been implicated as well. Measures to recruit and educate more nurses have been developed and implemented, thereby addressing the supply issue. Accepting more students into nursing programs has highlighted another aspect of the shortage—that of qualified nursing faculty. Efforts to obtain additional funding to develop an adequate pool of nursing faculty to help educate this new generation of nurses are being sought. New ideas for how to effect change to address the nursing shortage must include well-designed and implemented retention strategies congruent with the current multigenerational professional nurse work force.
