Abstract
Family medicine residency training has increased in complexity as quickly as medical technology has advanced. The traditional paradigm of 1 week of orientation prior to internship is becoming outmoded and insufficient in most residency settings. In 2005, we implemented a month-long rotation that has purposely been called “Intern Enrichment” to avoid the stigma of a month-long orientation. Curricular content includes basic skills workshops (eg, ECG, CXR, and ABG interpretation), inpatient and outpatient EHR training (using case-based learning and simulated patient care), standardized patient physical exams, and important “glue” time for class to bond. Evaluation data since implementation in 2005 has been extremely positive. We will share elements of our current curricula and facilitate discussion with participants about similar training in their programs.
