About Dennis M. Doyle

I am a Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Dayton, where I have taught since 1984. My areas of specialization include ecclesiology and Catholic Social Teaching. My recent involvement includes being director of publications for the College Theology Society; a planner and speaker for Catholic Common Ground; and a participant in the U.S. Methodist-Catholic Dialogue.
I am the author of The Church Emerging from Vatican II (Twenty-Third/Bayard) and Communion Ecclesiology: Vision and Versions (Orbis), as well as numerous journal articles. I am an associate editor of the revised second edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia.
As a Catholic theologian, I am committed to putting reason in the service of faith.

Honors and Awards

  • Second Place Winner, Catholic Press Association Book Award, Educational Books Category, 1993, for The Church Emerging from Vatican II.
  • Second Place Winner, Catholic Press Association Book Review Essay Award for "Traffic Jam on the Spiritual Superhighway" in Commonweal.
  • College Theology Society Article Award for Best Article of 1997 for "Journet, Congar, and the Roots of Communion Ecclesiology," which appeared in Theological Studies, (Sept. 1997).
  • Wrote lead book essay review for a book review section in Church (Summer 1997) that won a first prize Catholic Press Association Award.
  • Award, Special Service Award, College Theology Society, presented upon completion of 11 years as national Chair of Research and Publications.
