About Delyse Steyn

Delyse Steyn received her MA in Teaching and Curriculum. Her thesis was "Educating the teacher for the task of the school." Her D Ed: Dissertation was "Principles of adult education and curriculum design." Her greatest challenge is to take theory and make it come alive in activities that confront us as humans in various communication contexts. Innovation and critical thinking are prime values for her. Dr. Steyn enjoys gardening, walking, being in nature, reading, writing and working with disadvantaged people. She is married to Gerard Steyn and they have two married daughters. She is often involved in service activities with students, serves on various committees and is a Sabbath School superintendent at the campus church, Pioneer Memorial Church.
Delyse Steyn has a deep interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Particular interest is in Media Literacy and research in this area from an SDA perspective. She comes from a rich background of having taught Elementary School, High School, and having worked in different Libraries. She taught Education courses at Helderberg College (HBC), an extension campus of Andrews University in South Africa, and supervised their Student Teaching Program. She also built the Communication degree program at Helderberg College and taught many of the same courses that are taught in the Department here at Andrews University. In addition, she began the Media Literacy program at the college. She was instrumental in the development of the curriculum for Health Education program, Adult Education program as well as the Early Child Care program. During the Fall quarter of 1999 she had the privilege to be an exchange professor at Andrews University. Dr. Steyn was also a Project Manager for ADRA in Adult Literacy, Job Skills and Micro-Business in Khayelitsha, an informal settlement of 1.5 - 2 million people outside Cape Town.
