About Delphina (Del) Hopkins-Gillispie

At Valparaiso University since August 1999, Del Gillispie earned her Ph.D. from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana (2008) in Curriculum and Instruction and currently serves as Co-Director of the Mathematics and Science Education Enrollment and Development (MSEED) Program, Director of Licensure and Associate Professor of Education at Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, Indiana, USA. Before coming to VU in 1999, she was involved in medical research in prenatal-neonatal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She coauthored several papers on pulmonary function dealing with high-risk patients. She has done microbiological research with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service and served as an instructor on the college and high school levels. She has led numerous workshops and service learning projects on international education, intercultural sensitivity, and study abroad/ service-learning opportunities in Nicaragua, Central America, where she spent the last six years coordinating spring break trips with education students who taught in bilingual schools and orphanages in Central America.

Honors and Awards

  • Drs. Gary Morris, Del Gillispie, and Robert Clark were awarded $500,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) -STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering, Talent Expansion Program) grant to recruit talented math and science high school students who aspire to teach in the middle school and secondary classroom.
