Abstract
For Del Coates, products are a combination of essential information, without which an item is useless, and discretionary information, which can be modified to suit specific markets. Knowing how to manipulate discretionary information is a critical link between design and good business. Coates outlines a process for evaluating and tailoring the design of discretionary information to fit particular consumer groups.
