Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine and compare the health outcomes of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and patients with pre–diabetes mellitus (pre-DM) who completed a medically supervised very low calorie diet (MS-VLCD) program. A retrospective chart review was conducted to examine anthropometric, metabolic, and pharmacologic markers pre and post medically supervised program completion. Results indicated that of the 267 participants, 74.5% had pre-DM and 25.5% had type 2 DM. Both groups had a significant average reduction in clinical data points. MS-VLCDs can reduce HbA1c levels and improve metabolic health outcomes for patients with type 2 DM and pre-DM.
