About Deborah A. Raines, PhD, EdS, RN, ANEF, FAAN

Dr Raines is a researcher, perinatal specialist, curriculum design consultant and educational technologist. She is currently working on a variety of projects designing and implementing innovative education and evidence based clinical programs, and examining the transition of graduate nurses, and evaluating the use of aroma therapy in the clinical setting. She is a Sigma Theta Tau International career advisor and mentor. Dr. Raines is a contributing editor of the Evidence Based Research and mother-baby column for Neonatal Network: The Journal of Neonatal Nursing. She is currently teaching doctoral students in an interprofessional program for educator in the health professional and supervising doctoral research projects.

Previously, Dr. Raines was the Director of the Scholarship of Teaching and a Professor at Florida Atlantic University. From 2004-2006 she was co-PI and Director of a Grant from Tenet HealthCare Foundation to develop and implement an innovative Accelerated Second-Degree BSN Program. The program used the "CAN-Care" model of nursing practice education. During Dr. Raines' tenure as program director the program maintained a 10% over-enrollment, 100% retention and graduation rate and a 98.5% first time NCLEX pass rate.
In 2007, Dr Raines was asked to create a university-wide freshman reading program using a virtual community. In addition to leading a dialogue focused on a common reading, she has developed an interactive virtual community to socialize the incoming freshman to the FAU community and developed and taught an Interdisciplinary studies course to prepare FAU upperclassman to serve as mentor and virtual community leaders. This endeavor is part of the university's retention and student success initiative.

Dr. Raines' clinical expertise is as a perinatal nurse specialist. She was a member of the science team that authored the AWHONN Neonatal Skin Care guidelines. Dr. Raines’ current research interests span three primary areas: Perinatal Nursing, Innovative and creative educational/curriculum strategies and the health-related quality of life and experience of bariatric surgery. She is a Career Advisor for Sigma Theta Tau International in the areas of curriculum design, maternal and neonatal nursing.

Dr. Raines has been elected a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academy of Practice, a Fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education, and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.. She is an active member of a number of professional organizations including ANA, STTI and NLN and a volunteer at community health events. Dr. Raines is listed in Marquis' Who's Who is America.

Dr. Raines is the 2011 South Regional Winner of's Nursing Excellence Award in the category of Advancing and Leading the Profession. In addition she was named a 2011 grand prize winner in the Walden University Scholar of Change Contest. Here is the link to her winning video:
