Assistant Professor of Music
David A. Stringham has taught music to students of all ages in public school, private studio, college, and community settings. He is currently Assistant Professor of Music at James Madison University, where he coordinates the university’s interdisciplinary minor in Music and Human Services, leads the JMU Jazz Band, mentors undergraduate and graduate researchers, and teaches courses in music technology and music education.
Dr. Stringham’s research and teaching interests include composition, improvisation, music technology, and lifelong musicianship. He has presented research and best practice sessions in local, state, national, and international venues. His most recent work is in press with the International Journal of Music Education and Music Educators Journal and published in the co-edited book Engaging Musical Practices: A Sourcebook for Instrumental Music (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015). Other recent projects include transcriptions of three bonus tracks from Duke Ellington’s album Such Sweet Thunder.
Dr. Stringham also currently serves as Chair of NAfME’s Council for Music Composition and Research Council Chair for the Virginia Music Educators Association. Prior to joining the faculty at James Madison University in 2010, he taught middle school and high school instrumental music in New York State, and earned degrees in music education from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester (BM with Highest Distinction, MM, PhD).
