About David J. Westenberg

Dr. Dave Westenberg is Associate Professor in the department of Biological Sciences at Missouri University of Science and Technology. His laboratory primarily focuses on the role of rhizosphere microorganisms on plant nutrition and bioremediation and the antimicrobial properties of biomaterials. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Public Health from Michigan State University and his PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from the University of California, Los Angeles. He spent two years at the Institute for Microbiology in Göttingen as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Gerhardt Gottschalk and a six-month sabbatical in the Department of Cell Biology and Applied Botany in Marburg in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Mueller. He is active in microbiology education and is an alumnus of the ASM Scholars-in-Residence Program (Biology Scholars) and chaired the ASM Committee on K-12 Education and Outreach. In addition to his research and teaching, he is co-advisor of the Missouri S&T IGEM, synthetic biology student organization.

Dr. Westenberg joined the S&T faculty in 1997 and was named associate professor in 2003. He was Interim Department Chair in 2016-2017.

His research interests include antibacterial materials, microbiology education and rhizosphere microbiology. He is also co-director of the Missouri S&T Science Education and Quantitative Literacy (SEQL) program. He was named interim chair of Biological Sciences September 1, 2016 until August 31, 2017..

Fall 2015, Dr. Westenberg was named as one of 15 research ambassador for the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) and in Fall 2016 a Humboldtian on Campus for the American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2016 he was also selected as a higher education teaching ambassador for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Bionteractive program.
