About David Rousell

David Rousell is Research Fellow in Creative Arts and Sustainability in the School of Education, Southern Cross University. David is also in the final stages of completing his PhD thesis, States and Territories: Re-imagining university learning environments for the Anthropocene, under the supervision of Professor Amy Cutter-Mackenzie and Dr. Alexandra Cutcher.
David commenced his career as an internationally-recognised artist before moving into academia to further pursue his teaching and research interests. David brings twenty years of professional experience as an interdisciplinary artist to his academic roles, including exhibitions, installations, performances and film screenings in public galleries and performance spaces all over the world. David is also an accomplished interdisciplinary educator across the fields of arts education, arts-based research and environmental education. He has taught the practice, theory and history of the creative arts in primary, secondary and tertiary education contexts, and also has experience teaching in the areas of sustainability, climate change education, eco-cultural studies and media studies.
As an early-career researcher, David has developed a significant track record of over twenty peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and conference papers currently published or in press. These include publications in major national and international journals, including the International Journal of Education Through Art, Arts Education Australia, the UNESCO Observatory Multi-disciplinary Journal in the Arts and the Australian Journal of Environmental Education. He has also presented his research at national and international conferences, including the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE), and the International Society for Education Through Art (InSEA). Over the last three years, David has been successful in attracting $52,000 in competitive grant funding for a series of arts-based educational research projects, including CubeWalk (2014-2015), Walking with Media (2015-2016) and the CubeWalk Soundtrail (2016-2017). These projects have enabled David to work collaboratively with researchers across a wide range of disciplines, including leading scholars in the sciences, law and justice, the humanities, education and the arts.
