Interim Vice President for Research and Economic Development
David Oliver, professor of genetics, development and cell biology, began serving as interim vice president for research and economic development January 1, 2013. Prior to serving as interim vice president, Oliver was associate dean for research in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS).
Oliver joined the Iowa State faculty in 1996 as chair of botany (now part of the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology). He was appointed associate dean for research in LAS in 2003, and served as interim LAS dean from 2011 to 2012.
Before joining Iowa State, Oliver served on the faculty of the University of Idaho, where he was a co-principal investigator on the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), and associate director of the Institute for Molecular and Agricultural Genetic Engineering. He earlier worked as an agricultural scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
Oliver's research focuses on plant metabolism and how plants restructure their metabolism in response to environmental and developmental changes.
