Osteopathy and Swedenborg: The Influence of Emanuel Swedenborg on the Genesis and Development of Osteopathy, Specifically on Andrew Taylor Still and William Garner SutherlandPCOM Scholarly Papers
AbstractOsteopathy & Swedenborg demonstrates the previously unrecognized influence of Swedenborg's ideas on the creation and development of osteopathic medicine, especially in regards to body/mind/spirit and the anatomical inter-relationship of the nervous system, fascia, and fluids throughout the body. This includes a study of cranial osteopathy and Swedenborg's paradigm of the brain and soul-body interaction, comparing concepts such as Swedenborg’s spirituous fluid and Sutherland’s Primary Respiratory Mechanism. In the process of making these connections the book traces the influence of Swedenborg's ideas through and across the America of the 1800s, specifically through the metaphysical/healing movements of Transcendentalism, Spiritualism, New Thought and Theosophy.
