Given that impeachment was a deliberate strategy invoked by Democrats even before Trump’s inauguration and that there have been repeated calls for close to three years the claim that the Ukrainian telephone call of July 25, 2019 was anything of sufficient consequence to justify launching impeachment in the House is ludicrous.  I agree with Harvard’s Alan Dershowitz that what is going on is a bad faith and unconstitutional effort to stage a coup removing a constitutionally elected US President.   Like Dershowitz I have an extensive civil rights, history of representation of poor and disadvantaged people , worked on social justice causes and spent most of my adult life as a registered Democrat.  That actually is why I find the behavior of Pelosi, Schiff, Nadler, Maxine Waters, Al Greene, and too many others so contemptible and dangerous.  

Even though it remains unlikely the Senate will vote to impeach Trump, the secondary goal of the Democratic actors is to smear Trump in the minds of 2020 voters.  This is a long running element of the Democrats’ narrative.  It was first developed through the false accusations of Russian collusion debunked by the Mueller investigation.  Then by spying on the Trump presidential campaign using illegal warrants obtained through the FISA Court, followed by relying on a “Dossier” funded by Hillary Clinton and the DNC,.  In the process use of the Obama Administration’s Department of Justice and FBI against a presidential candidate and then the President himself has corrupted the institutions to the point they will take years to recover public trust.  

Severe damage has already been created by the Democrats’ raging thirst to regain power gained through eight years of Obama and that seemed secure for another eight years until Clinton “crashed and burned”. This is reflected in many Democrats’ words following Trump’s stunning 2016 victory, the intention to “resist at all costs” and do whatever was necessary to remove Trump from power.  The use of the Ukrainian telephone call with President Zelensky as the basis of impeachment relies on grotesque levels of speculation and imagination about intent and motives while misstating what was actually said between Trump and Zelensky.  This represents an attempt to destroy a sitting president that in its partisan zeal, its charging of impeachment accusations that are not even violations, and use of the vital power of impeachment for completely partisan ends threatens the unique and special system created in the founding of America’s political system.  So let’s look at the specific situation involved in this controversy.
