Farm accounts 1982. A very bad year
Acres USA (1983)

Abstract
American agriculture faces many challenges. One of the key issues is incomplete accounting for unintended but often very costly impacts like soil erosion, groundwater overdraft, and adverse impacts of pesticides and fertilizer. If costs are considered more completely the illusion of profits vanishes. This is a call to make changes to improve sustainability of farming operations and the food supply. Reducing subsidies and taxing harmful chemicals, improving water use, and limiting salt buildup will help move towards sustainability.
