Bringing Beaver Back to Alameda Creek, California
Restoration Notes (2022)
  • David A Bainbridge
Abstract
In the early 1800s fur trappers may have taken more than a thousand beaver from the Alameda Creek watershed. This eliminated thousands of dams, destabilized the creek, harmed the runs of salmon and steelhead, reduced biodiversity, and increased flood risk. Restoring beaver to the creek would provide many benefits. It would have to start with beaver dam analogs until sufficient food was available for beaver to return. It would tie in nicely with educational programs and recreation in the Sunol Wilderness.
