Abstract
Henry Burden's horse shoe making machines played a critical role in the Civil War. These remarkable machines turned out 3,600 shoes an hour and kept the Yankee army horses and mules better shod than the Confedrates. This improved mobility of the cavalry and artillery and kept horses and mules healthier in the enormous supply chains.
