Abstract
This paper presents theory and research concerning preparing for and recovering from a natural disaster. We present a multivariate risk factor model that examines factors that may influence positive and negative functioning. We also discuss factors that may negatively impact emergency personnel working in a post-disaster environment. Specific recommendations are offered that emergency management personnel can use to plan short-term and long-term intervention programs. These programs may minimize distress and aid recovery for survivors and emergency personnel.
