Abstract
Investigated the effects of personal experience with natural disasters on judgments about other disasters. Three months after Hurricane Andrew, 57 undergraduates completed a questionnaire regarding their experiences with Hurricane Hugo, their judgments about damage and psychological distress due to Hurricanes Hugo and Andrew, and whether or not they had donated supplies to the victims of Hurricane Andrew. Ss who had experienced emotional distress or property damage due to Hurricane Hugo correctly estimated more property damage due to Hurricane Andrew than Ss who did not experience emotional distress or property damage. Loss of property due to Hurricane Hugo was positively related to sending money, supplies, and volunteering time to victims of Hurricane Andrew. Emotional distress was positively associated with volunteering time but not related to sending money or supplies to Hurricane Andrew victims.
