Concept for the Efficient Transfer of External Power to and from High-Speed Flows
Proceedings of the 40th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit (2004, Fort Lauderdale, FL)

Abstract

The concept of translating electrodes in an otherwise conventional MHD system is introduced and examined analytically. This concept, denoted translating field MHD (TFMHD) allows the direct transfer of mechanical rather than electrical energy from or to the surroundings. Potential applications include the utilization of turbo-machinery external to flow-paths as well as possible innovative power generation and flow acceleration configurations.
