Abstract
Rev. J. B. Hawthorne, minister at Atlanta’s First Baptist Church from 1884 to 1896, was "progressive" in many ways, but he opposed aspects of women’s rights and the “new woman” of the late 19th century. The article examines his views on women in terms of both theology and Lost Cause ideology; specifically, it suggests Southern Baptist opposition to women preaching and assuming other leadership roles was perhaps based more on sectional animosities than on scriptural authority.
