Dr. Chaudhuri writes that his work has two aims: "first to make a specific study of the various economic activities of the European Companies, in Bengal [contemporary Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa]; and secondly, to cast light on the indigenous trade and commercial organizations, and the interaction between the two."
