Abstract
Kumkum Chatterjee's thorough and interesting social history of "indigenous" merchants and bankers of Bihar covers the period 1733-1820. For the most part written from the archives of the English East India Company, it seeks to portray not only the commercial "fortunes and misfortunes" of non-European merchants, but also their participation in changing "political and cultural milieu", as the Company consolidated its rule.
