Abstract
The 2018 World Cup launched a thousand op-ed columns about national identity. The English team was praised for its diversity. The French team was said to be African. Mesut Özil quit Germany due to the racism he felt he experienced from the German football federation and German society at large.
The editorial board of darkmatter, an open access, independent online journal established in 2007 that is committed to pursuing contemporary anti-racist/post-colonial critique, developed an online conversation to unsettle and disrupt some of the media narratives that circulated over the summer of 2018.
