Abstract

Thomas Cooper (1759-1839), nullifier and president of South Carolina College, used the ideas of Jeremy Bentham and other English utilitarians to support slavery. While Cooper did not have much direct impact on the course of the proslavery argument, his writings do show that the South had not intellectually cut itself off from the rest of the world in the antebellum period.
