Abstract
This book chapter examines the application of copyright and patent law principles to outputs of AI machines. It explains that the protection of AI outputs by copyright is doctrinally unsound and normatively unjustified. In the patent realm, the chapter expresses doubts aboute the need to issue patents for inventions without a human inventor. In both cases, the chapter argues that the search for a human cause for a copyrighted work (originality) or patentable invention (inventiveness) is a promising path.
