Among its many values, Catholicism gives a strong emphasis to place. This can be seen in numerous ways within the tradition. Pilgrimages have inspired Catholic art from The Canterbury Tales to contemporary films by Luis Buñuel or starring Martin Sheen.1 Numerous churches have their own feast days on the calendar, including one (the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica) that supersedes the ordinary Sunday when it occurs on that day. Much of the greatest contemporary Catholic art—from the stories of Flannery O’Connor and Kirstin Valdez Quade to the films of Martin Scorsese—grounds itself thoroughly in place, whether it be a small town, a neighborhood, or a big city.
