ILLiad, GIST, and EBL: How Bucknell University’s PDA + DDA Collection Development Model Gives Patrons What They Want, While Saving the Library Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars a Year

Abstract
In 2010, Bucknell University’s Bertrand Library signed on to be an early adopter of OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services to replace our legacy ILS. With WorldCat becoming our OPAC, hundreds of millions of bibliographic records became immediately available in our patrons’ primary search interface, making patron-driven acquisitions inevitable. Shortly after adopting WMS, Bucknell canceled its approval and other automatic shipment plans in favor of going to a completely patron driven acquisitions monograph collection development policy. In 2013, Bucknell worked with EBL to introduce over a hundred thousand DDA titles to our patrons, and today we have access to a quarter million DDA titles, and that number continues to grow.  This presentation will document the workflows, processes, and staffing involved in making this possible, as well as the extraordinary increase in number titles accessible to our patrons and dramatic reduction in expenditure. ILLiad, the GIST workflow, and WorldCat are the key services that have made this venture possible.

  1. about GIST and how ILLiad can be adapted to fit workflows outside of traditional interlibrary loan.
  2. about how removing the silos around interlibrary loan and acquisitions can make their patrons’ experiences easier, while empowering libraries to make fulfillment decisions best for them
  3. how DDA and short-term loans can complement ILL and help build a collection that is specific to your patrons’ needs.
