Abstract
Richard Fenske, MPH, PhD, was no ordinary industrial hygienist. Neither was the focus of his career ordinary. His choice of scientific pursuits was grounded in his extensive background in philosophy, theology, and the spiritual humanitarian-ism that animated his life and work. He focused on how to improve the assessment of pesticide expo-sure among agricultural workers and their families, particularly their children. He was innovative and developed a unique fluorescent tracer technology to visualize pesticide exposure, including exposure that eluded protective measures such as respirators and coveralls. He added greatly to the body of scientific knowledge, but his true passion was supporting and sharing his experience with his graduate student mentees
