About Cynthia J. Campbell

After undergraduate studies I worked for a fast-paced growing (38% per annum) technology firm in
multiple capacities including international assignments. Desiring to improve my skills I attended graduate school earning three graduate degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After graduation, I have been a professor at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and Iowa State University. I have taught at the doctoral, executive MBA, MBA, and undergraduate levels as well as executive courses in Poland and Russia. In 2002 I was honored by the College of Business at Iowa State University as the Principal Financial Group Finance Faculty Fellow. Prior to joining Iowa State University I was a Senior Financial Economist in the Office of Economic Analysis at the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. Last year I had the privilege of being a FIMA Visiting Professor at the Asia-Pacific Financial Research Center at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
My research interests are eclectic but generally focus on firms and the issues faced through the life-cycle of business. Subsequent to working at the SEC my interests shifted to start-up companies and entrepreneurship, small firm financing and valuation, private security placement markets, emerging and frontier markets, international security markets and security issuance, as well as statistical methodology issues in US and international capital markets. I continue to have an interest in areas in which I have published such as convertible securities, executive compensation, corporate governance, and regulation in international markets. Among the journals I've published in are the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Financial Management, and Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting.
I served as an elected Academic Director on the Financial Management Association International's Board of Directors, serving on the FMA’s nominating committee for future Presidents and Board members, as a member of the FMA’s Long Range Planning Committee, and Chair of the Demographics Subcommittee. I am currently on the FMA’s Editor Search Committee for the Journal of Applied Finance, and on the Editorial Board of the organization’s Oxford/Financial Management Association Synthesis and Review Series. In 2003 I became a co-editor of the Eastern Finance Association’s journal, The Financial Review. I am also an Associate Editor for The International Journal of Finance, and on the editorial board of the Review of Financial Economics. I am currently on the Eastern Finance Association and Midwest Finance Association Boards of Directors.
