Advances in information technology allows architectural models to be created in full-scale synthetic environments equipped with navigational and interactive capabilities. This study explores the theoretical basis on how design processes and representations can be affected if design is conducted in such an environment. An experiment was designed, and two subjects were invited to participate. The design processes were recorded, and protocol analysis was conducted to decipher the characteristics of conducting design in full scale. The overwhelming sense of immersion and projection in the virtual reality environment has altered the design behaviors and processes. The design process is almost purely visual, with a lot of attention devoted to the sizing, texturing, and coloring of the details of the objects. The tool also allows real time tests of functionality and scale, and therefore, produces better designs in those aspects. This Virtual Architectural Design Tool (VADeT) offers potential for teaching and studying design.
