Abstract
It is important to re-examine the legal policies that guide higher education in preparing citizens whose lives are dedicated to the common good. The wave of change toward inclusion and equity, especially in terms of social justice, in many institutions prompted by overt discrimination and ill-treatment of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) is laudable. Despite the increasing diversity in higher education, inclusion is still a challenge given the inadequacy of principles and legal policies that perpetuate the exclusion of historically marginalized groups. Ethics in Higher Education: Promoting Equity and Inclusion through Case-Based Inquiry, edited by Rebecca M. Taylor and Kuntz Floyd Ashley, presents an alternate lens that embodies ethics to promote equity and inclusion for social justice. The book alludes to controversial issues through the discussion of six fictional cases in higher education related to invited speakers, tenure and promotion, sexual misconduct, justice-oriented students, free tuition, expectations of historically black institutions, and community campus relationships. The book includes diverse perspectives that can guide stakeholders in making decisions on controversial issues. Stakeholders in higher education include executive leadership, boards of trustees, diversity officers, student senators, deans, faculty, committees on tenure and promotion, title IX directors, alumni, students, parents, and anyone interested in social justice who will benefit from the perspectives shared in the book.
