Presented as part of the session: Teaching in the Context of the Latest "Reform": Accounts from the Inside Out

A group of five Mills Teacher Scholars have joined to share data about teaching under "No Child Left Behind". Each teacher asks a different question regarding the current education policy climate in California and presents the results of a yearlong investigation on that topic. They argue that it is essential to prioritize lessons and learning that develop young democratic citizens and reconsider the standards structure which focuses on passing mandated tests that assess limited skills. With the help of our discussant, we hope to open up a conversation about the impact of the current state and national legislation on the work of teaching.
