Teaching Teachers to Care: Preparing Teachers for the Moral Dimensions of Teaching

Abstract
In this climate of standardization, when test-scores narrowly define educational quality, educators may overlook the context of relationships within which students learn. Quality teaching may necessitate recognizing cultural differences and learning styles to engage students in learning. Therefore, preservice teachers need opportunities to consider moral stances toward teaching such as care ethics, which acknowledges the centrality of relationships. This study examines one teacher education course taught by an instructor committed to care ethics. Through observations, interviews, and pre and post surveys, the data show change in the preservice teachersÂ’ understandings concerning how to care for their students in a multicultural urban context. The data also generate theory concerning learning experiences designed to teach teachers to care.
